The Madras HC granted bail to the 13 accused in the doctor burial case and reprimanded the authorities for not taking enough precautions for burying the doctor, who died of COVID-19. The accused in the case had opposed to the burial, fearing the spread of the virus among the people in the locality. This could have been cleared had the authorities already informed about the precautions taken. In the turn of events, violence had taken place at the burial ground, and corporation health employees and associates of the deceased doctor were attacked.
The doctor’s wife and son had to leave the location due to the violence, and the body was taken to Velangadu as Kilpauk people opposed to the burial in their area. On granting the bail, the court asked the accused to ensure that such a situation doesn’t happen in the future. The accused pleaded that they were local people who had no understanding of the risks involved, but the officials argued that the accused did not listen to them when they tried explaining. The accused were granted bail on Monday asking them to be careful next time.
