The Central Government has a panel of eight members to deliberate on rules and laws regarding drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices.
This eight -member panel will be steered by V.G. Somani, who is the Drugs Controller General of India.
This committee was contemplated first by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on August 27th. This eight-member committee will draft the New Drugs, Cosmetics and Medical Devices Bill.
The other members of this panel are—Rajiv Wadhawan who is Director in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, S.E. Reddy, AK Pradhan, and NL Meena.
The committee’s prime job will be to have ‘pre-legislative consultations’, to scrutinize all previous bills on Drugs, Cosmetics and Medical Devices, and then after examining the current Act, the Committee has to come up the with new Bill.
There have been demands to keep Medical Devices separate from the pharma industry, and it was demanded by stakeholders that like food has an independent regulatory body like FSSAI(Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), so too should medical devices be having their own regulatory body.
It was asked by stakeholders that medical devices which are essentially engineering goods should not be under (CDSCO) Central Drugs Standard Control Organization.
The eight-member committee is expected to submit its draft by November 30th, 2021.
