Refused to extend police protection to a couple in a live-in relationship

The Rajasthan High Court, refused to extend police protection to a couple who were living in a live-in relationship noting that the woman was already married. Now, granting protection to the couple may indirectly amount to giving the Court’s assent to such unlawful relations.

The petitioner, a married woman, was allegedly compelled to leave her matrimonial house. Then she was residing with the second petitioner. The petitioners alleged that the respondents were unhappy with the woman living with another man and were threatening the petitioners. Then they prayed to the court to provide, since their life was in danger, police protection.

Justice Satish Kumar Sharma relied on the recent judgement of the Allahabad High Court in Smt. Aneeta vs. State of UP observing that it is a well settled legal position that a live-in relationship cannot be at the cost of the country’s social fabric.
