A woman, who allegedly practised law in Alappuzha town without completing her law studies and enrolling at the Bar Council, is now absconding. According to reports, the woman has been identified as Cessy Xavier.
She was involved in the legal proceedings, including at the district court, for two-and-a-half years, according to the complaint. After allegations were raised over Xavier’s qualifications, the Bar Association asked her to submit the documents within 24 hours. It was also found that her name was not listed at the Bar Council in the enrolment number given by her. She had been allegedly practicing by showing someone else’s enrolment number.
In two-and-a-half years of legal proceedings, she won a Bar Association election and even got appointed as the Librarian. In a complaint filed before the local police, the Association also said that Xavier stole certain books and documents belonging to it misusing her position as Librarian. She has been absconding ever since.
The Police have registered a case against her under Section 417 (punishment for cheating), 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code.
Meanwhile dramatic developments took place in the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court yesterday, when she made an attempt to surrender. As per reports, she chose to appear before court thinking that bail will be available. However, on realizing that the police has included non-bailable offences in the FIR, she fled from the court premises. The police has not been able to trace her yet.
