The Supreme Court will hear a case challenging a Madras High Court decision against a murder conviction

The Supreme Court will hear a plea today appealing a Madras High Court ruling overturning the petitioner’s conviction and sentence in a murder trial.

The case involving the murder of Velmurugan by accused Stalin, Ramadoss, Sivadoss, and Shanmugam will be heard by a bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M.R. Shah.

“There has been adequate proof that all four accused had a mutual agreement to eradicate Velmurugan (deceased) because they had assembled at the scene of the incident with firearms, knowing perfectly well that Velmurugan (deceased) and Veeramurugan (PW 2) will arrive for the temple celebration,” the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had held.

“The cause for the assault was that the accused had been questioned by Chellapandian (PW 1) and his son Veeramurugan (PW 2) for drinking liquor on their farmland. The type of the wounds and the areas of the body that were attacked demonstrate the accused’s intent, according to a High Court judgement of May 8, 2020.
