Directing removal of encroachment in Faridabad Khori Gaon SC calls for no compromise on forests

On Monday the Supreme Court directed the Municipal Corporation to not encroach into the forest land at Khori Gaon, Faridabad where they had planned to demolish 10,000 houses after a plea seeking a stay of such a demolition was filed before it.

Challenging the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran Rehabilitation Policy, 10,000 families living in Khori Gaon filed a plea and requested for a report of compliance from the Haryana Forest Department to be given.

The bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar directed the DCP of Faridabad to provide police protection to the officials of the corporation. It further noted an interim order passed in February 2020 in regard to the manner of vacating the land as it came under the act of encroachment and asked as to why did it have to continue till June 2021.

It enquired the MCF as to why they had not been removed from the forest land.

Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves sought for providing accommodation to the people evicted, to which the court held that the same would be determined by the State. He further sought for a need to change the 2003 cut-off date.

The Court proceeded to direct the removal of encroachment on forest land in compliance with the earlier orders within a period of 6 weeks.
