Adolescent girls to not miss school on menstruating days: Karnataka HC

The State government was asked to ensure the distribution of sanitary napkins to adolescent girl children between the age group of 10-19 years under the Shuchi scheme, stating that lack of hygiene products should not be a barrier for girl children to attend schools on menstruating days.

The Shuchi scheme aims at instilling awareness about menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls, studying in schools and staying in hostels between the age group of 10 to 19 years.

The order said,
“They (girl children) ought not to miss attendance in the school on certain days of the month on account of lack of effective hygiene products being available to them on certain days of the month”
Moreover, the Court also concluded that having separate toilets for girls would also help in securing their health and privacy.

Furthermore, till the time the schools are closed, the health workers will be distributing the sanitary napkins, door to door and if schools reopen, then the distribution of the same will be made in the schools itself.
