Allahabad High Court, on Monday, ordered lockdown in 5 major cities of Uttar Pradesh citing the chaotic health situations and worsening pandemic conditions. The lockdown will remain in force till 26th April, 2021.
The bench comprising honourable Justice Ajit Kumar and Justice Siddhartha Varma observed that putting lockdown for public domain is a matter of individual government concern but since the government of UP failed to develop a substantial plan, the court had to intervene and do the needful.
The court further observed in a democracy there are expectations from a government to meet the challenges of public concern and it is the duty of judiciary to keep a check on the systems of working and address issues that are not dealt with in time. Referring to the government, the Court remarked “those in the helm of affairs of governance are to be blamed for the present chaotic health problems”.
The court added saying, “One would only laugh at us that we have enough to spend on elections and very little to spend on public health”.. The court passed directions in regard to the cities of Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Kanpur, making it compulsory for the directions to be enforced forthwith.
It further suggested the government to consider imposing complete lockdown in the entire state for the next 2 weeks.
