Calcutta High Court: Prohibits hunting and sale of birds as domestic animals or otherwise.

Case Title: Re: Smuggling and Illegal Trading of Endangered Species of Birds

The High Court of Calcutta prohibited the hunting, selling, buying and any other type of exchange of birds. The bench consisted of Chief Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice Arijit Banerjee.

The issue of illegal smuggling and trading was brought by a suo moto action. This trading was done with the endangered species of birds.The matter was taken up by the bench based on a newspaper report. The report was about the cruel intrusion into the life of birds.

Therefore, the court observed that all forms of illegal activities regarding the animals and birds should be stopped.

The court added that few areas are fragile and these areas are treated as critical in terms of management of wildlife.In order to control wildlife crime, the court gave directions to many authorities to work jointly according to the orders of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.

The court held that the directions given by the court should be strictly followed, if not, it will be looked upon as violation of order and the obligation will be on the officers for non-implementation.
