The Apex Court of India on Monday granted bail of 5 days to Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan on an application filed by the Kerala Union Working Journalists seeking his release to let meet his ailing 90-year-old bed-ridden mother.
The bench of Chief Justice S.A. Bobde, Justices A.S Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian had heard the habeas corpus writ petition asking the release of Kappan from illegal detention of Uttar Pradesh Police when he was on his way to report on the Hathras Gang-rape case that held in October 2020, which captured the nation’s eyes.
The bench while delivering the judgment said that the bail is being granted purely on humanitarian grounds. And the bail will not hamper the case proceedings. But not letting the accused meet his dying mother will result in violation of his human rights.
