A plea was filed by V S K Tamilselvan about the illegal transportation of cattle from place to place. The transportation and the treatment given to animals were against the provisions of Prevention of cruelty to animal act, 1960. The plea also submits that many regulations exist regarding the transportation of cattles to slaughterhouses but none of the regulations were followed.
The Madras High Court while hearing this plea, gave direction to the state government of Tamil Nadu to file counter-affidavit within 6 weeks. The court also mentioned that transportation of cattle also includes goat, sheep and lamb.
The court directed that guidelines regarding the same have to be framed. The ethical treatment of animals should be the main aim of the guidelines and the cattles raised even if it is for human consumption, the animals should be treated properly. The matter is further listed for hearing on 5th April.
