In the PIL filed by Anjali Pandey along with the other petitioners against the Uttar Pradesh Government in PIL no 228/2021, the Allahabad HC asked the state govt. that how many toilets for women are not there in the Police stations of UP.
The Bench of Justice Jayant Banerji and Justice Sanjay Yadav directed the Standing Counsel appearing for the State Government to seek instructions and also place status report as to how many Police Stations in the State are not having toilets for women.
Petitioners who appear in person are the students of various law colleges filed this public interest litigation seeking the directions and prayed before this court as mentioned below.They have prayed before the court to direct the state to ensure the construction of ladies toilets in the Police Stations where it is not constructed along with all necessary facilities like toiletries, running water, electricity, fan, doorknob with keeping in view the privacy and dignity of women.
They have also asked to direct all the respondents to complete the semi constructed/ damaged/incomplete toilets in Police station of Allahabad city and after building should provide basic facilities as mentioned above.Petitioner also prayed to court to direct the Senior Superintendent of Police to constitute a monitoring committee and it should be headed by a women police officer and consisting of Police Inspector, SI, Constable for the inspection of toilets in the Police stations in Allahabad city and place it’s report before the SSP of Allahabad periodically under the monitoring of HC.
Petitioners also mentioned in their plea about issuing a mandamus by the court and direct the state as well as DGP of Lucknow to make sufficient budgetary allocation for the construction and maintenance of washrooms and toilets in the police stations.
This matter will be listed as fresh in the 3rd week of this month.
