SC seeks reply from whatsapp for not sharing UPI data with any third party*

In addition to the plea which seeks to get the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court regarding the sharing of UPI data with any third party, a number of interlocutory applications have also been filed in the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court, on Monday, sought reply from whatsapp on a plea which seeks directions from RBI and NPCI only to make sure that any data collected through UPI will not be shared by the messanging app, whatsapp to its parent company, Facebook, and also to any other third company.

It said these allegations have become particularly worrisome at a time when India has banned many Chinese applications on the ground that those applications were or could be used for data theft and could lead to security breaches.

It has further sought a direction that RBI and NPCI should ensure that WhatsApp is not permitted to launch full scale operations of ‘WhatsApp Pay’ in India without fulfilling all legal compliances to the satisfaction of the court.
