For the Ministry of woman and child development, the prime cause of concern in the year 2020 is the huge spike in the cases of domestic violence with over 5000 cases being registered in the year.
As the lockdown imposed in March due to covid outbreak, the National Commission for Women was flooded with complaints of domestic violence as the women were confined in their home with their abusers. The number of complaints keep on increasing and NCW,till now, has received over 5000 of such complaints.
As per the chairperson of NCW, Rekha Sharma, the reasons for this are the factors like financial instability, isolation among others and economic insecurity. Also she said that due to lockdown many cases of the domestic violence were not being registered.
She said that, ” the machinery for the protection of women from domestic violence has not been identified as an essential service during the lockdown.”
