In a petition seeking a direction to ban and prohibit all gambling, betting, wagering websites, the Delhi High Court today issued a notice.
In public interest litigation, a Division Bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan sought a response from the Central government, as well as the Delhi government.
Dream11, My11circle, PaytmFirstGames etc are some of these websites listed by the petitioner.
As per the petitioner, according to the laws of our country, gambling and wagering are per se illegal, and have historically been regarded as vices.
The petitioner asserted that, because of its ease of access, ability to play on the go, etc., online gambling is a far worse evil than regular gambling.
Concerns about addiction among youngsters to these games were also raised in the plea. It is further claimed that such online gambling websites may be a great place to perform hawala operations, money laundering, etc.
The matter will be heard next on January 29.
