Indian Medical Association files contempt petition for non-payment of salaries

As per the Direction of the Supreme Court passed on 17th June, the governments of all states and union territories had to ensure payment of salary to all healthcare workers along with provision of appropriate accommodation in compliance with COVID-19 guidelines.

This order, passed in the Writ Petition No. 759/2020 in Arushi Jain v. Union of India, has not been followed and doctors from North, South and East Delhi Municipal Corporations have not been paid their salaries for months.

A contempt petition for non-payment therefore, has been filed by the Indian Medical Association. The knowledge of non-payment is also alleged to be in the public domain.

Relief is sought for the implementation of the order and grant of salary owed to the doctors working selflessly and tirelessly during the pandemic. The petition also states that their salaries are their basic fundamental rights and not means of special treatment from the authorities.
