Serum Institute rejects charges levelled by a vaccine trial participant, imposes ₹100 crore defamation damages from volunteer

Vaccine major Serum Institute of India on Sunday strictly denied all the charges that put up by a COVID-19 vaccine volunteer who said that he has suffered serious side effects, and threatened to seek heavy defamation damages for “malicious” allegations against the Institute.

The charges were levelled by a 40-year-old volunteer who took part in the ‘Covidshield’ vaccine trial in Chennai has alleged serious side effects, involving a virtual neurological breakdown and impairment of cognitive functions, and has sought for Rs 5 crore compensation in a legal notice to Serum Institute and others. He in his notice has also asked to stop any further conduct of trials of the vaccine on human beings by Serum Institute.

“The allegations in the notice are malicious and misconceived”, said a Spokesperson of Serum institute. While the Institute of India is sympathetic with the volunteer’s medical condition, there is absolutely no correlation with the vaccine trial and the medical condition of the volunteer.

The 40 year old volunteer is laying the wrong charges for his medical problems on the COVID vaccine trial, the official statement of The Institute further added.

“It is very much evident by the facts and the circumstances that the intention behind the spreading of such malicious information is an oblique pecuniary motive. The Serum Institute of India will seek damages of Defamation in excess of 100 crores for the same and will strongly defend and condemn such malicious claims on the institute at a time when the whole world is looking towards it, with so much hope,” Serum Institute said.
