An order was passed by the Sub-Court in Kottayam to take over St Mary’s Cathedral, Manarcad. The order was passed stating that the Church should to be handed over to the Orthodox faction. The court relied on the 1934 constitution of the Malankara Church while delivering the verdict.
St Mary’s Cathedral was initially under the Jacobite faction. Recognized as an internationally renowned Marian pilgrimage, the order came as a big setback because several profit-making establishments functioning under the church would suffer.
Following the order, synod secretary and assistant metropolitan to Kottayam diocese of Orthodox Church Yuhanon Mar Diascoros said,
“The court has ordered to convene a general body of those who abide by the 1934 Malankara Church Constitution to elect a new governing body. This body will then get the administrative powers of the church. The order also stipulates that no one should obstruct the new body from carrying out its duties.”
