Lost crop to preserve evidence’: Owner of field in which Hathras girl was ‘gang-raped’ demands compensation

The millet crop in the Hathras field where the 19-year-old girl from Dalit community was allegedly gang-raped and assaulted on September 14 has dried as the authorities, in order to preserve crime evidence, had directed the farmer to not irrigate or harvest the crop. The farmer has now asked the government to compensate him for the loss. The farmer has demanded Rs 50,000 from the government as compensation for the crop loss. They said that they have lost an entire year of hard work as their family was asked by authorities not to irrigate, harvest or do anything with the crop in our nine-bigha land so that evidence of the crime could be preserved.

The farmer said that the authorities had asked his family to not irrigate or harvest the crop in the field to prevent the destruction of crime evidence.
The farmer has asked the government to give him Rs 50,000 for the loss of his millet crop. He also expressed his inability to repay a loan worth Rs 1.6 lakh due to crop loss.The Hathras SP said that he didn’t know that the farmer was asked to not irrigate or harvest the crop.
