Arnab Goswami’s plea challenging the privilege motion against him, adjourned by Supreme Court

Background

A motion was moved against Arnab Goswami, Editor-in-Chief of Republic Media Network, by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik, accusing Goswami of using derogatory language against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and NCP president Sharad Pawar in relation to alleged inaction by the state government in the case pertaining to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Issue-
Whether Arnab Goswami has breached priviledges as alleged against him by the Maharashtra Assembly and Legislative Council.

Submission by Sr. Adv. Harish Salve on behalf of Mr. Arnab Goswami-

  1. The notice was served to the respondents but it has been refused. Thereafter Adv. Salve was asked to file an affidavit stating the same.

Outcome-
The bench comprising Chief Justices SA Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian has decided:

  1. to adjourned the matter for two weeks.
  2. The bench suggested that the action ought to be taken by the Privileges committee.
