Judge Amitabh Rawat of the Kakardooma Additional Sessions Court passed the order allowing Umar Khalid’s 10-day custody to the Delhi Police who shall investigate the allegations pursuant to a UAPA FIR.
The Delhi Police alleged that the JNU student was involved in a premeditated, deep-rooted conspiracy that caused the Delhi Riots earlier this year. It is their contention that Khalid’s provocative speeches contained “propaganda of hatred based on the alleged persecution of minorities.” The custody was thus requested to confront him with documentary evidence.
Khalid’s lawyer argued that there was full cooperation in the investigation of the ANTI CAA protests and the custody was therefore unjustified. However, the court allowed the custody deeming it fit for an effective investigation. Umar Khalid shall be next produced before the court on September 24th. Till then, the police have been directed to take measures of Khalid’s safety and security.
