The Bench comprising of Justices Rohinton F. Nariman, Navin Sinha, and Indira Banerjee on August 19 passed an order to extend the deadline for the CBI Special Court for pronouncement of its judgment in Babri Masjid case till September 30.
The criminal case against senior BJP leaders LK Advani, Murali Manohar Joshi Uma Bharti and Kalyan Singh was directed to be concluded by August 31 as per the order passed by the Supreme Court in May this year. In the letter dated May 6, Judge Yadav had informed the Supreme Court that the trial was at the evidence stage and the same was yet to be concluded.
The Supreme Court had then taken this fact on record and in view of the prevalent circumstances at the time, extended the timeframe for completion of trial till August 31. However, the Court observed, “Having read the report of Mr. Surendra Kumar Yadav, learned Special Judge, and considering that the proceedings are at the fag end, we grant one month’s time, i.e., till 30th September, 2020, to complete the proceedings including delivery of judgment.“
