There are 26308 inmates across 45 jails in Maharashtra. The number of covid -19 cases were last recorded to be 1007, there were 6 deaths and 84 recoveries.
The deaths were in Yerawada Central Prison, Pune, Taloja Central Jail, Navi Mumbai and Jails in Dhule and Amravati.
Arthur Jail ,which is known for the number of people it houses, has recorded a high number of covid positive cases along with 46 officials who were also tested positive.
It has been claimed that continuos and rigorous testing is being done in the prisons. About 10476 inmates were released on bail or parole to prevent this very outbreak.
“All possible efforts to decongest prisons are being taken, but some of them are still overcrowded. Also, bail is granted by a court and not the prison authorities. The most important thing to notice here is that we have been able to successfully contain the Covid-related deaths in prisons,” said Sunil Ramanand, additional director general (prisons).
