A division bench of the Bombay High Court comprising Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice AS Gadkari disposed of a public interest litigation filed by BJP MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha against the inflated electricity bills being generated by power distribution companies all over the city.
The PIL mentioned that notices were being issued by the distribution licensees threatening disconnection of supply of electricity if the charges were not cleared by the due date, and sought relief for the consumers against such threats.
Advocate Rohan Savant, from the petitioner’s side, argued that the dispute resolution mechanism which is otherwise available under the regulations framed by the Commission is not an effective remedy, which could be availed of by the consumers.
The court observed that the previous decision disposing of two similar PILs on the issue of inflated bills is applicable to the said case as well. It thus suggested to approach the Grievance Redressal Officer if needed.
