PLEA ALLEGES PUBLIC CHARITABLE HOSPITAL DEMANDED AN EXORBITANT FEE FOR COVID-19 TREATMENT FROM SLUM DWELLERS BOMBAY HC DIRECTS INQUIRY

In the recent case of Abdul Shoeb Shaikh and others vs. State of Maharashtra and Ors. 12.06.2020
A plea was filled in Bombay HC against The KJ Somaiya Hospital and Research Centre for charging exorbitant fees for Covid-19 treatment.
The order passed by the justices RD Dhanuka and Madhav j Jamdar for the inquiry report conducted under the personal supervision of the charity commissioner and to be filed by June 19.
The petitioners claimed that the hospital authorities demanded a large number of fees from them and threatened of evicting the petitioners for not paying the hospital bill.
It was further seen that the medicines which were given by the hospital were available at cheap cost and most of the charges were levied for doctor’s visit and the provision of protective gear.
There are provisions where people belonging to the poorer sections of society are given beds and other facilities but it was not done in this case.
The petitioners were under serious pressure they paid the raised amount and had to take medical loans too.
During these difficult times, one has to do everything to save the lives of our loved ones.
But it seems hospitals are taking advantage of it to make quick money.
The bench of the justice ordered to make an inquiry under two clauses
A. Whether the hospital trust is liable to reserve 10% beds in its hospital for economically weaker sections of the society and if so, on what terms and conditions.
B. Whether such conditions are strictly fulfilled by the hospital or not during the period of the lock-down or otherwise.
The matter will be taken up next on June 23.
